John Dickey May 24, 2009

Hi all,

Some of you have received phone calls from me. Others, I either don't
have your number or I have yet to find time to call. My sweet,
gentle, generous and kind husband passed from this life yesterday
afternoon.

We have had a very tough year and the last months and particularly
days, were tougher still. He was at home, in our bed and never had to
leave home again after his bouts in the hospital during the first
weeks and months of this year.

Since this is a holiday, I will not be able to make final arrangements
for a celebration of life until tomorrow. I will forward that
information when I have it.

I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, those of you that
have been communicative and supportive toward John and me during this
year of horrors are appreciated more than you will ever know. I am,
at this time in my pioneer blood," take care of business" mode so, I
am doing pretty well. We will see how long that lasts.

If there is anyone that you think should know, please contact them. I
am very tired and I am sure that I have forgotten someone.

Sincerely,

Shere

John update May 3, 2009

Hi all,

Today is the anniversary of John's retirement party. Wednesday will
be the anniversary of the diagnosis. What a long ride we have had.
It has been a long time since I have written an update, I just began
to feel a bit uncomfortable about writing so much and John was doing
so well.

It is with a very sad heart that I write this update. John has
battled and claimed victory over the deadly cancer that he has battled
for the past year. That battle has brought him much fatigue and
disappointment from not being able to do the things he has always
loved to do. Several weeks ago, he began to refuse food. He says he
has no appetite and often, the food he did eat, cause nausea. The
doctors have given him meds to fight the nausea and he no longer has
problems with that. He just does not want to eat.

He is very thin. His children and some of his grandchildren came this
weekend to spend some time with him. We have called in Hospice. I
don't know how much longer John will be with us but, he has indicated
to all of us that he does not want to continue. We all have agreed
that it is important that we follow his wishes.

I won't be writing any point by point updates. I thought that many of
you would want to know.

Thank you all for being so concerned and supportive of us through this
year of nightmares. John has been very appreciative of your concern
and you have been my lifelines. Thank you so much.

Love,
Shere

Not so good today

John is not doing well right now. He is running a low grade fever and has been in bed all day, still there. He is down to 142 pounds. Nurses are coming in the morning to take blood and the doctor moved the next scans up to this coming Thursday from the 23rd. I am not sure what is going on. I guess we will find out soon.

John Update January 23, 2009

Hi all,

My updates seem to get less and less descriptive. Long story short,
John was admitted back into the hospital today. He was running over
102 degree fever. He will receive more antibiotics, an MRI on his
brain tomorrow and probably will be there for several days.

Thanks for your concern.

John Update Jan. 9,2009

Happy New Year to everyone. I ushered out the New Year with a "Good
Riddance" toast over a game of dominos with a few friends.

I have heard from a number of you asking how John is since I haven't
written an update in some time. The last time that I reported, John
was back in the hospital. He got out on Monday before Christmas, in
the afternoon. By Tuesday early morning, he spiked another fever. We
discussed with Dr. Duriex the option of going back to the hospital
but, decided to do another round of antibiotics, at home.

Since then, John is doing much better. Because of his willingness to
eat a bit more and being fed by IV 12 hours per day, he has gain 12
pounds! He began physical therapy today and will continue to do so 3
days per week for the next 5 weeks. We go back to Arrington on the
20th of January for lab work and then to get another PET scan. The
PET scan should tell us whether the surgery removed all of the cancer
from John's esophagus. I don't expect to get the report until January
27th when we meet again with Dr. Figorrea. We expect that John will
be put through another round of chemo. I will let ya'll know about
that.

I want to thank you all that have been in contact with me/us. I thank
you for your thoughts, prayers, support and love. John is taking the
dogs for a walk today and did so yesterday. This is a first for many,
many months. Nash and Peaches are thrilled with this resumed activity.

Love,
Shere
